All phobias, regardless of what they may be, are all caused by inner emotion. That is to say that a phobia is a “ symbolic representation of an internal subconscious anxiety:
- Agoraphobia - Fear of Open Spaces - or can be fear of unfamiliar places
- Claustrophobia - Fear of enclosed spaces - the feeling of being enclosed or trapped. Elevators, closets, tunnels, small rooms, being stuck in traffic, etc., are all common - being on a plane.
- Coitophobia - Fear of sexual intercourse - can affect both men and women. The act of intercourse is not the challenge, it is the rejection, trust, self worth, guilt, shame and hurt from past experiences that have been associated to the event.
- Emetophobia - Fear of vomiting - the act of, being around others who might get sick or any representation of vomiting. This fear can be all consuming, leading to the avoidance of certain foods and places where it is believed they or others may become ill.
- Obesophobia - Fear of gaining weight- often found in anorexics and bulimic, those suffering from this fear will go to all lengths to avoid gaining weight. Guilt, anger and rejection may lie behind this fear, along with limiting beliefs about themselves.
- Microphobia - Fear of germs - Any situation or environment where it is believed germs can breed or exist. Can make the person very lonely as they perceive family and friends as carriers of germs and thus reduce social interactions.
- Socialphobia - Fear of people - this can be crowds, speaking in front of groups (Glassophobia), meeting strangers, or even being afraid of interacting with family member. Extreme shyness. Low Self-esteem or worth, feeling of being judged by others, or fear of rejection, embarrassment.
